Yamunotri is one of Chardham and the starting point of Yatra. You can enjoy a full day trek to reach Yamunotri Temple 6 km trek from Hanuman Chatti and 4 km trek from Janki Chatti. The temperature is low down throughout the year and the major parts of peaks are covered by snow. Apart from the Yamunotri Temple there is an important major attraction like Surya Kund, Divya shila, Hanuman chatty, Janki chatty, Saptarishi Kund, Kharsali, Barkot etc. Kharsali is the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna. During the winters when the roads are blocked due to heavy snowfall and unable to reach the temple then the idol of Goddess is transferred to Kharsali for the next six months. Jolly Grand Airport is the nearest Airport and Rishikesh and Dehradun is the nearest railhead. Taxies and Buses are easily available from Dehradun or Rishikesh to Hanuman Chatti. Yamunotri is not directly connected with motorable roads. During the winters when the roads are blocked, the idol of Goddess Yamuna is transferred to Kharsali for the next six months. The Kharsali village is the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna. Goddess Yamuna is the sister of Yama and it is believed that take a bath in the water of Yamuna River reduced the painful and unnatural death. Vegetarian foods are easily available here. May to October is the best month for visit but don’t forget to carry heavy woolen clothes during the trip.
