Also one of the four sites of Char Dham religious is Yamunotri which is the source of Yamuna River. Stand of Yamunotri proudly with its gushing waters of Yamuna, enormous mountain peaks and glaciers. After whom the dham is probably named also the seat of Goddess Yamuna is Yamunotri dham. Yamunotri temple was established by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal which temple is located on the left banks of the Yamuna River. From all the sides Yamunotri is surrounded by the mountains which are offshoots of the Himalayas. The real source of the Yamuna River is the glacier lake of Saptarishi Kund on the Kalindi Parbat. Yamuna is called Yami who was the lady of life said to be the daughter of Sun and twin sister of Yama who was the god of death is the venerated Goddess Yamuna. Yamuna comes down into Saptarishi Kund from here and gushes southwards in a series of waterfalls from here. A dominant mountain in central Himalayan area of Garhwal and divides the watershed of Yamuna from that of the Ganges River is Banderpoonch is situated to the west of the Kalind Parbat. Yamunotri is the first over stop during Char Dham Yatra. Many of devotees make the trip to the Yamunotri’s sacred site to get their wishes find and fulfilled redemption.

Yamunotri as the hermitage of an ancient sage Asit Muni who was used to bath both in Ganga and Yamuna but in his old age he couldn’t travel towards Gangotri. A stream of Ganga started to flow beside that of Yamuna when realizing his problem. Usually the first stop- over for the Yatra Char Dham is the temple Yamunotri. From painful and untimely death said to cleanse all sins and protect is a bath in sanctifies water of Yamuna.

Kapat Opening and Closing Dates:
It will be opened on the day of Akshaya Trithiya on 7th May 2019 and closed on the day of Bhai Duj after two days of Diwali.

• The Goddess Yamuna holy abode is situated on a side of Banderpoonch Parbat near the foot of Kalind Parbat.
• Among them the Surya Kund is the most significant very near to the temple Yamuna Devi and many hot springs are here.
• Before offering reverence to the main deity of Maa Yamuna is a reddish- brown rock near the Surya Kund that requires to be worshipped.

Available are taxis and buses from important destinations such as Barkot, Rishikesh, Tehri, Dehradun and Uttarkashi. At all times of the year available are regular trains to Dehradun and Haridwar. The closest airport towards Gangotri is Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun.
