The meaning of the word Munnar is believed to be ‘three rivers’ as it is located on the banks of three rivers- Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru. The city has two partitions, namely as Old Munnar, it is the place where tourist information office is situated and second one is Munnar where the bus stop and most of the guest houses are located.

It is an ideal place for picnic where one can activities like Cycling, boating and roller skating as well as Hammocks& meditation caves; Pothamedu View Points, the journey to this view point takes you through the old bridges and narrow roads and also offers scenic views during the drive; Attukal Waterfalls, it is a place where waterfalls are set amidst hills and jungles. One can also visit two dams and tea gardens on its way. But it is advised to go top station first and then dams and tea gardens Kundala Lake, it is one of the most popular places among honeymoon couples. It is the first arch dam of Asia. The hills and valleys that surround the lake are the house of Neela Kurunji flowers which bloom once in twelve years. The lake has various things to do like speed boating, pedal boating, visiting Echo Point, sightseeing, window shopping and many more; Madupetty Dam, it is yet another attraction of Munnar popular for its excellent view of the lake and tea plantations. Basically the dam is a storage Concrete Gravity dam, constructed to conserve water for hydroelectricity. Except beautiful views the lake also offers boating facilities and if you are lucky then you may be able to see elephants; Eravikulam National Park, this sanctuary was established to preserve the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. It is a rare mountain goat which is facing extinction. The park has two zones in the one is Rajamala where tourists are allowed. No one is allowed to go beyond this because of security reasons; Marayoor Dolmens, the place is sprinkled with waterfalls, rivers, rocky hills, bamboo forests, sandalwood trees, cave temples and paintings which clearly show that the place has many things to visit. Other than this, one can also go for Anamudi, Indo Swiss Dairy Farm, Lock Hart Gap, Cheeyapara Waterfalls, Life of Pie Church and so on.
One can visit this place anytime in the year. It is advisable to carry light and heavy and; light woollen clothes.
