It lies in the close proximity to India- Pakistan border which is located at a distance of 30kms from the Bikaner city.
Karni Mata is believed to be the incarnation of goddess Durga and performed lots of miracles during her existence. She was a mystic and dedicate her life for the betterment of poor and oppressed of all communities. The goddess was also the founder of Deshnok.
Legend has it that, Karni Mata got married with Kipoji Charan but after some time of marriage she expressed her unwillingness to engage in marital relations. She has also arranged for husband to marry her younger sister Gulab so that he can spend a proper married life. It is said that once Karni Mata’s step son drowned into water and died Karni Mata said Yama (god of death) to restore her son’s life. But when Yama denied, she herself being an incarnation of goddess Durga made her step son alive and announced that from now on no-one will die in her family but will incarnate in rat. At present the temple houses above 20,000 rats. It is considered as auspicious if a rat crosses over one’s feet and also the glimpse of Khaba (white rat). Even false food of rats is distributed as a ‘Prasad’.
Besides the main shrine visitors can also take a look of a museum which is situated in front of the temple and it also an entree fees of Rs. 2 only.
Since Deshnok is situated in one of the hottest state of India so it is obvious that the place experiences extreme temperature throughout the year. In order to celebrate a festival in the honour of Karni Mata, a grand fare is organised twice a year in which lots of devotees came and seek the blessings of goddess.
