It history says that, before it was known as the Lokpal which means the Sustainer of the people. It also finds its mention in autobiography of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. However no one knew about this for more than two centuries. Later, Bhai Santosh Singh who was a historian and poet narrate a story of Dusht Daman in which he introduced Guru Gobind Singh Ji as a vanquisher of evil and also described the place of the worship. Then in the late 19th century, Pandit Tara Singh Narotam compiled a summary of numerous Sikh pilgrimage sites, which includes this Gurudwara. According to the description provided in Mahabharata, Narotam reached the place where King Pandu meditated. He found Hemkund sahib in between 1872-1957 A.D., by which Bhai Vir Singh Ji, famous historian and poet, agreed to the accuracy of Narotam’s data of discovery of Hemkund Sahib. Apart from this, according to Hindu mythology, it was known as Lokpal because it was the place where Lakshman, younger brother of lord Rama, used meditate here.
