According to the legend it is said that Adi Shankaracharaya was found Kedarnath temple in 8th century. The existence of Kedarnath Temple is the result of Pandavas search of Lord Shiva. It is said that the temple has a great history, when Pandavas killed all his own brothers then they feel guilt. They decided worshiped of Lord Shiva to wash all the sins, but Lord Shiva refused their request and converted himself into a bull and tried to run from away. Bhima one of Pandavas was able to catch hump of Bull. Where the hum of bull appeared which location is called Kedarnath and inside the temple in the form of bull hump Lord Shiva worshiped. The other parts of the bull appeared in different location in Kedarnath which called Panch Kedar.

Kedarnath temple opens in the last week of April or first week of May every year and closes after two days of diwali on the day of Bhai Duj. May to June is the best time to take part in the yatra with pleasant weather. From July to till August monsoon take place here with heavy rainfall. Again September to till Diwali is the best time to visit Kedarnath but don’t forget to carry heavy woolen clothes during yatra. Diwali to till February one can see heavy snowfall here. Winters are harsh here so when the roads blocked due to heavy snowfall then the idol of Lord Shiva brought down in Ukhimath village for next six months. Ukhimath is the winter seat of Lord Shiva.

Apart from this Gaurikund is a major attraction of this place which is dedicated to Goddess Parvati wife of Lord Shiva. Gaurikund is the starting point of most beautiful and amazing 16 km trekking route to reach Kedarnath Temple. It is said that this is the place where Goddess Parvati impressed Lord Shiva for marriage. There is a beautiful lake and a religious temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati.

• Vasuki Tal: It is popularly known for its crystal clear blue water lake situated about 8 km from Kedarnath.
